Intercession and constant struggle against evil and ignorance are reflected in the sculpture “St. George the Victorious “. St. George is depicted riding a white horse, he pierces a snake with a spear. This image is based on a legend and refers to the posthumous miracles of the great martyr George. They say that near the place where St. George was born in the city of Beirut, a snake lived in a lake and often devoured the people of that area. Superstitious people, in order to appease the snake’s fury, began to regularly cast lots to give him a young man or a girl for food.

Once the lot fell on the emperor’s daughter. She was taken to the shore of the lake and tied. When the beast started approaching her, suddenly a bright young man appeared on a white horse and struck a snake with a spear and saved the girl. This young man was the holy great martyr George. With such a miracle, he saved young boys and girls within the borders of Beirut and led the local people to Christ.

The image of St. George the Victorious is a symbol of the victory of good over evil, the spiritual world over the lower, the world of passions.
