NICHOLAI KONSTANTINOVICH ROERICH

1874-1947

Russian artist, mystical philosopher, writer, traveler, archeologist, public figure

Roerich inspired millions. He paved the way for higher knowledge through art. According to N. K. Roerich the culture is connected with the problems of the cosmic evolution of mankind. As he wrote: “Culture is based on Beauty and Knowledge”. Roerich repeated Dostoevsky’s famous phrase with a small correction: “Awareness of Beauty will save the world.” Beauty is perceived by man only through culture, where creativity is an integral part.

He created about 7000 paintings and about 30 literary works. The author of the idea and initiator of the Roerich Pact (Treaty on the Protection of Artistic and Scientific Institutions and Historic Monuments), the founder of the international cultural movements “Peace through Culture” and “Banner of Peace”. In 1925-28 he organized and participated in the Central Asian and Manchurian expeditions. Expeditions had scientific goals and collected a rich ethnographic material. In 1928 the Roerichs created the Himalayan Institute of Scientific Research “Urusvati” in India.
