Russian religious and political philosopher, representative of existentialism (1874-1948).

Art and freedom are the main directions of Berdyaev’s philosophy. The kingdom of spirit is determined by the presence of freedom. The existence of a primary, uncreated freedom, over which God has no power, leads to the violation of the “Divine Hierarchy of Being” and gives rise to evil. Man is given a terrible destructive and creative power. Technology development leads to a choice – it will depend on the spiritual state of a person whether he will direct his power to creation or to destruction. The space age needs new spiritual dimensions. New period in human life implies not only scientific-technical progress but also an ethic transformation.

Nikolai Berdyaev is considered as the most outstanding Russian philosopher. Although his destiny was intended for him a long separation from the Motherland (in 1922, Berdyaev was exiled from the Land of Soviets and lived until his death abroad, in Germany and France), but until the last days, as a true Russian, he considered himself responsible for the fate of Russia.
