The sculptor illustrates one of the legends about the life of St. Francis of Assisi. The moment of domestication of a ferocious wolf, which destroyed the cattle and people of the city of Gubbio in Italy, is captured. The city was shackled with fear. Attempts to catch the wolf were in vain. People asked for help from St. Francis of Assisi, who went to “negotiations” with the wolf. Calling the four-legged brother, the saint learned the sad fate of the beast, he was forced to lag behind the pack because of his illness. Exhausted from hunger, the wolf rushed at animals and people. Saint Francis offered the beast an alliance: the wolf does not harm the city, and the inhabitants of the city feed the animal. As a sign of agreement and trust, the wolf extended its paw to the saint. So even the most ferocious beast bowed down before the great love of Saint Francis.
