Russian surgeon and anatomist, teacher, public figure, Founder of military field surgery and anatomical experimental directions in surgery.

Nikolay Pirogov is considered as the “father of Russian surgery”. He was the first in the history of medicine who started to operate the surgical patients with narcosis, he executed several thousand of operations. He has invented synthetic diarthrosis, gypseous bandage, used amylum bandages. Even nowadays brilliant intellect, intuition and ideas of Nikolay Pirogov are considered fantastic. A humanist, a true servant of human health and moral development, Pirogov considered the main idea of universal human education as the formation of a good citizen: “Education should cultivate a real good person”.

Pirogov was a talented manager of mass medical aid. He took an active part in the leadership of the world’s first women’s medical group called “Holy Cross Community of Sisters of Charity”.

A humane, painless method of surgical treatment, great experience in conducting operations, detailed handbook of anatomical charts; all of this puts Pirogov on a par with the great healers Hippocrates, Galen, Avicenna, Paracelsus.
