Pericles, as a supporter of democracy, conducted a series of reforms that marked an important stage in the democratization of the Athenian polis. For 15 years, from 443 BCE, Pericles was elected annually to the position of strategist. He was the personification of the noblest type of Hellene, who various harmoniously combined talents and qualities. He complemented the gift of a speaker, the abilities of a statesman, the experience and prudence of the commander with honesty and unselfishness, simplicity and moderation in life.
The period of Athens, which went down in history as the “golden age”, is associated with the name of Pericles. During his reign, Pericles strengthened the naval power of Athens, adorned the city with the famous buildings of the Parthenon, Propylaea and others. Pericles gathered near himself a group of the most intelligent and talented people of Greece, who showed themselves in various fields – politics, art, philosophy.
